Martin Snoddy had the pleasure to coordinate with Bill Bares to have a live perfomrce with his Jazz Group Hard Bop Explosion. This took place at Isis in Asheville, North Carolina. Martin Snoddy is very influenced by Jazz. With organic feel, you will see the structure of Jazz mixed with Vocal Hip Hop. Take a look below for Martin Snoddy’s own words about this concert.
“Last year pianist Bill Bares and I discussed the idea of a collaboration between Hip Hop and Jazz involving his own Hard Bop Explosion (HBE) jazz quintet and the Hip Hop duo composed of myself and Alpha Lee. Bill sent me a youtube playlist of about 50 jazz tunes to get the ball rolling. I wrote to about 10 of them using both brand new verses (one of which incorporated some melodic properties of a song) and for times sake, some older verses which I just threw in over some 12 bar blues sections. A midst everyone’s busy schedules, the rappers and musicians were only able to meet at sound check the day of the show to briefly discuss the set list and song structures. The man behind the camera at JSYK productions was contacted 3 days before the show and thankfully agreed to come out and do this fine camera work and post production. This footage is the 1st of 2 sets that we did that evening. During the 2nd set the rappers and musicians became more comfortable and really locked into a groove, but unfortunately, it was a set we were unable to capture on film. I can say only with the utmost sincerity that it was truly a hell of a privilege to be able to play with such fine musicians. I’d love it if we could all play again! Special thanks to Bill Bares and the rest of HBE, Alpha Lee, and the people at JSYK productions.” – Martin Snoddy
